Birubi Beach - Off Leash Dog Friendly

Birubi Beach is the most popular destination in the Port Stephens area, spanning part of the 34 kilometre stretch of Stockton Bright. The coastal stretch is exposed to the wind and waves, but the northern corner is hidden away from the sea breeze, providing a more peaceful place to explore. The area on which Stockton Bright lies belongs to the Worimi people who manage the area in conjunction with National Parks and Wildlife Services. The area itself is quite large, boasting a size of over 4,200 hectares of land. 32 kilometres belong to the ever-shifting sand dunes. Some of these sand dunes reach heights of up to 50 metres which make for a majestic view while you’re sand boarding down the dunes.

We have compiled a short list of things to do with the kids when visiting Anna Bay in Port Stephens.

Robinson Reserve - Something for everyone

Hugging the shoreline of Birubi Beach, the park has car parking and direct access to the beach, as well as all the amenities you would expect (toilets, showers, drinking fountains, picnic tables and BBQs undercover) It also has a modern skate park, playground and cycle path. There are two large grassy areas that are perfect for a picnic, somewhere to kick a ball around or to sit and watch the kids play.

Stand Up Paddleboarding - Bagnalls Beach

The calm waters and wind protected bays make for perfect conditions. Bagnalls Beach is well known for its crystal clear turquoise water (especially on high tide)

Great for kids, great for the parents and perfect for doggies as it’s an off leash dog friendly beach

Pasta Di Porto - Anna Bay

If you're ever in the Anna Bay area, be sure to check out Pasta Di Porto. This cafe is known for their delicious ravioli and coffee. The ravioli is made fresh daily, and the coffee is a special blend that is perfect for relaxed holiday vibes. Be sure to try both when you visit!

It is located behind Anna Bay Bottle Shop and can be accessed from the Anna Bay Tavern carpark.

The ravioli here is some of the best we've ever had. It's made with fresh ingredients and comes in a variety of different flavours. They stock up to 20 gourmet filled ravioli varieties at any one time alongside traditional sauces and freshly cut pastas like lasagnes or cannelloni - all made from scratch using only high-quality local ingredients.

Shoal Bay Foreshore Walk

Cellar Cafe in Fingal Bay may just be the best kept secret of Port Stephens. This place is a a real little gem, the fact that dogs are allowed to sit out the front AND out the back is amazing!!!

It is located one street back from the beach and is usually super busy with mostly locals who are their all throughout the days to enjoy breakfast, lunch and dinner. The meal sizes are really generous (keep an eye on the specials board as they had one of the best burgers we’ve ever had)

Order a takeaway coffee, go for a walk along the dog and baby friendly concrete path that runs adjacent to the beach from the Kiddies Corner all the way to Shoal Bay. There is a fenced in off leash area about half way along.

Fingal Bay Spit

To access the spit you can walk the length of Fingal beach which would take you about 30mins. A shorter and shadier alternative is a local track through Tomaree National Park and over the sand dunes.

At the end of Ocean Beach Road in Shoal Bay lies the well kept track leading to Fingal Spit.

We will be honest with you, it is a tough walk through the sand, especially on the way back. There is one steep sand dune to conquer, but the track offers respite in the shade from the canopy of the trees for part of the walk.

The walk is approx 20min each way, longer if stopping for the sights, koala spotting and to catch your breath!

Iris Moore Rock Pools - Anna Bay

A local secret in Anna Bay is the Iris Moore Rock pools. This area is adjacent to Birubi Beach and is a rugged rocky outcrop. Exploring the rocks on low tide you will find little hidden white sandy oasis

Boat Harbour Beach

Only a short 6 minute drive from Anna Bay lies the sleepy town of Boat Harbour. Boat Harbour truely is a hidden gem with something for everyone. The beach has recently been announced dog friendly!

Stand Up Paddleboarding - Shoal Bay

What better way to start your day then with Shoal Bay Stand Up Paddleboarding! Located on the idyllic shore of Shoal Bay beach, paddleboarding here is great for people of all levels of experience.

Valhalla Restaurant Bar

Valhalla is often overlooked and is a real hidden gem! The restaurant bar sits on the beautiful Spruce Estate and boasts a picturesque green backdrop of a pine forrest. When you walk through the front doors you feel as though you have entered another world and stepped back in time. The highland cattle will keep the little ones entertained while the expansive grassed area is a great place for them to burn off some energy.

Set in the bush, there is plenty of natural shade and space making it the perfect place for the whole family to relax and enjoy a day out. Your fur babies are welcome on the grass (book a table ahead as this place can get busy) )with doggie treats available from Murrays market.
