Anna Bay Sand Dunes

Worimi conservation lands is 4200 hectares of sand dunes that make up Stockton bight. The dunes are best accessed from Anna Bay (Birubi beach) and are the largest sand dunes in the southern hemisphere.

These towering dunes provide the perfect backdrop for a variety of exciting outdoor activities for the thrill seekers and those wanting to take in the scenery. You can see the dunes on foot from Birubi Beach Surf Life Saving Club and is pram/wheelchair friendly. There is a viewing deck on top of the surf club that overlooks the entire dunes and on clear days you can see as far as Newcastle. It is also one of our favourite spots to watch the sun set as the sand dunes cast all different colours and shadows.

The sand dunes provide an endless list of activities to keep you busy. Popular activities include sand boarding, quad biking and 4WD tours. These all provide a unique way to experience and explore the dunes. If you want to take it all in at a slower pace, we recommend a camel or horse tour along the dunes and onto the beach. We recommend booking tours in advance as things book out fast during the warmer months. If a tour is not for you, you can still explore the dunes on foot and have some fun. Grab an old bodyboard and let the kids slide down the smaller dunes located closer to the waters edge (this will provide hours of fun).

Four wheel driving is also a popular activity at the Stockton sand dunes and a perfect way to escape the crowded beach during the summer time. If you are taking your dog with you, ensure they are on a lead at all times and are only allowed on a 3km section of the beach front. To be able to drive through the sand dunes and onto the beach you will need a beach driving permit that you can purchase from the Anna Bay BP petrol station.

Another highlight of the dunes is, Tin City. This historic site is home to a collection of old tin sheds that have been repurposed as charming homes. It's a unique place that has Mad Max vibes, and is a must-see for anyone visiting the dunes. This is about a 15min drive up the beach and the sand does get quite soft. If you don’t have much beach driving experience we suggest Tag along tours. They are a great way to explore the dunes with the confidence of having an expert with you.

Remote Beach camping is available however this is limited and must be booked through the Worimi conservation lands website
